Summary

Everyone in Shaker Heights was talking about it that summer: how Isabelle, the last of the Richardson children, had finally gone around the bend and burned the house down。

In Shaker Heights, a placid, progressive suburb of Cleveland, everything is meticulously planned - from the layout of the winding roads, to the colours of the houses, to the successful lives its residents will go on to lead。 And no one embodies this spirit more than Elena Richardson, whose guiding principle is playing by the rules。

Enter Mia Warren - an enigmatic artist and single mother- who arrives in this idyllic bubble with her teenage daughter Pearl, and rents a house from the Richardsons。 Soon Mia and Pearl become more than just tenants: all four Richardson children are drawn to the mother-daughter pair。 But Mia carries with her a mysterious past, and a disregard for the rules that threatens to upend this carefully ordered community。

When old family friends attempt to adopt a Chinese-American baby, a custody battle erupts that dramatically divides the town - and puts Mia and Elena on opposing sides。 Suspicious of Mia and her motives, Elena is determined to uncover the secrets in Mia's past。 But her obsession will come at an unexpected and devastating cost 。 。 。

An interesting read, however I was unimpressed by the overall story。 Nothing really ever happens。 By the time something does, the book is abruptly over。 It leaves most questions unanswered, and most characters up in the air。

Great book with such deep characters! So glad they made it into a show to give visuals of the book

Somehow I was so stressed by this book。 I usually don't care about motherhood but this story had me interested in its many storylines。 Somehow I was so stressed by this book。 I usually don't care about motherhood but this story had me interested in its many storylines。 。。。more

This novel was very fake-deep。 Every "twist" seemed somehow both unimaginative and unrealistic。 Set in a boring suburban town, which is actually- wait no, that really is the whole premise, yawn。。。 This novel was very fake-deep。 Every "twist" seemed somehow both unimaginative and unrealistic。 Set in a boring suburban town, which is actually- wait no, that really is the whole premise, yawn。。。 。。。more

I really don't get why this book was/is so popular。 For me it's just another example of the power of marketing and all the money that went into that。 I really don't get why this book was/is so popular。 For me it's just another example of the power of marketing and all the money that went into that。 。。。more

An engaging read exploring white suburbia, toxic parenting and class differences done with great nuance and depth。 It was a slow burn that sometimes seemed to drag but the pace picks up as the characters and their pasts are revealed which brought up interesting perspectives on social issues。 My main qualm with this book are the younger characters being relatively underdeveloped compared to the parents, especially Izzy since the book starts and ends with her。 Overall, a compelling read。

It’s not a super fast-moving read, but it keeps you hooked for sure。 I loved it。

Kat

Great book! very interesting and complex characters

Melissa

Interesting themes but I had a hard time connecting with any of the characters。

Okay, okay, I know I’m waaaaay behind on getting around to this one - but I went in blind not having watched the Hulu series either (though that didn’t stop me from reading Elena’s entire character in Reese Witherspoon’s voice)。 4。5 stars rounded down on this one。 Why down? Because coming off The Vanishing Half’s exploration of family, I just can’t justify also giving this one 5 stars。 I really enjoyed the format of this book where it starts with the penultimate scene, giving you the final image Okay, okay, I know I’m waaaaay behind on getting around to this one - but I went in blind not having watched the Hulu series either (though that didn’t stop me from reading Elena’s entire character in Reese Witherspoon’s voice)。 4。5 stars rounded down on this one。 Why down? Because coming off The Vanishing Half’s exploration of family, I just can’t justify also giving this one 5 stars。 I really enjoyed the format of this book where it starts with the penultimate scene, giving you the final image of the puzzle upfront and then slowly unwinds itself- secrets, greyareas, families, motherhood, art, order, fires (figurative and literal - and in the end you’re left with all the pieces in your hands, seeing how all those jagged-edged topics fit together just so。 Where does it lose half a point for me? I thought there were so many opportunities to have more internal monologue and self-exploration for all the characters。 The novel set up so many things that each character was wrestling with, yet we got minimal exploration of this from the character’s point of view outside of a couple lines here and a spurt of dialogue there。 I wanted the “Elena explores why she treats Izzy the way she does” but for all the characters and each of their demons。 Anywho, a slow-burning portrait of family dynamics (pun intended) and the way secrets can rip everything we hold we dear to pieces despite our best efforts to keep them just-so。 If you’re like me and haven’t picked this up yet - I suggest you do。 。。。more

A small utopian town with a public trial that creates such backstabbing animosity that buried secrets and half-truths are revealed。A little slow to start but this book turned out so good! The way each character and each story is intertwined leaves you needing to read one more chapter until you’ve found yourself done with the book。The characters are so relatable to your own high school crowd。 You can sympathize with those you initially disliked and, in turn, dislike those you rooted for。The only A small utopian town with a public trial that creates such backstabbing animosity that buried secrets and half-truths are revealed。A little slow to start but this book turned out so good! Didn't read this but the Hulu show was pretty good。 Scene-by-scene not a thrill, I mostly just had it on in the background because it didn't really hold my attention most of the time, but the story as a whole was good。 Didn't read this but the Hulu show was pretty good。 Scene-by-scene not a thrill, I mostly just had it on in the background because it didn't really hold my attention most of the time, but the story as a whole was good。 。。。more

Couldn’t put this book down! A gripping story and liked the themes of morality and ethnicity。 Excited to hear it has been made into a TV show and look forward to seeing Reece Witherspoon and Kerry Washington recreate such a great plot。

This book started a little bit slowly, but it built in such a methodical way, weaving the characters together so effortlessly, and bringing so many storylines in, that it causes a driving need to finish by the end。 Such a beautiful and haunting story。 Even though there are so many threads pulled together in a relatively short book, it does not feel forced。 Wonderful read!

I decided to read this after seeing endless positive reviews。 For me, this book was the perfect length - not too long, but long enough to tell a good story。 I am left with quite a few questions, which is why I docked a few stars。

Sophie

I really enjoyed it and I look forward to watching the series。

I fell in love with Mia and Pearl; or maybe actually their vagabond style of living。 Simple but it drew people in; all that love and understanding。 We all could use a little of that life。 More loving, less judging。 I swept through this book and lived it with them。 It's an amazing, unforgettable novel。About my book: I purchased this hardcover for $2 from my public library's "Withdrawn" section。 It shows how well read it was。 It's funny but even if I were ever to find a first edition autographed c I fell in love with Mia and Pearl; or maybe actually their vagabond style of living。 Simple but it drew people in; all that love and understanding。 We all could use a little of that life。 More loving, less judging。 I swept through this book and lived it with them。 It's an amazing, unforgettable novel。About my book: I purchased this hardcover for $2 from my public library's "Withdrawn" section。 It shows how well read it was。 It's funny but even if I were ever to find a first edition autographed copy I would love it but I always cherish the book I physically read first。 That copy will always be my cherished possession。 。。。more
